Elgin Academy

Elgin Academy was chartered in 1839 and is the oldest college-preparatory school west of the Alleghenies. From its earliest days, the Academy has been both nonsectarian and co-educational.

The campus is located 35 miles northwest of Chicago and serves the communities of the greater Fox River Valley, with its largest enrollments coming from the Barrington and St. Charles areas. The 18-acre campus is part of the Historic District in Elgin and includes seven buildings that house the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools serving preschool through grade 12. A new Media, Science and Fine Arts center with library/media center, theater/performing arts space, as well as science, math and fine arts classrooms will open in Fall 2008.

The educational program is designed to give students sound knowledge in a broad range of the arts and sciences and the skills necessary to acquire and use that knowledge as lifelong learners.

The personal environment of the Academy encourages students to be active in the arts, athletics, and community service.

Each year, the senior class, which is 100 percent college-bound, attends schools in all regions of the country, including Harvard, Colgate, William and Mary, Oberlin, Macalaster, Northwestern, Tulane, and Stanford.

The hallmarks of an Elgin Academy education include: widely recognized academic programs; broad exposure to the arts; close association with faculty as teachers and advisers; opportunities for personal growth and talent development; and complete preparation for successful college placement.

Admission to the Academy is selective and seeks students representing social, economic, and ethnic diversity. The Academy’s financial aid program assists 20 percent of the student body who could otherwise not afford to attend.
