The
Avery Coonley School is an independent,
co-educational, nonsectarian school for academically bright and
gifted students from Kindergarten through grade eight. The school
also provides an Early School program for three and four year olds.
The 378 students come from 35 surrounding communities.
Mrs. Coonley founded the school at the turn of the
century at her home in Riverside. It has been at the current site
since 1929. Her views mirrored those of John Dewey and other progressive
educators. Much of the early approach to educating children remains
a cornerstone of the school today. The academically bright and gifted
children at Avery Coonley are enthusiastic and take much pleasure
in learning. The school provides motivated children of high intelligence
a safe, nurturing, and challenging educational experience. The challenging
curriculum is enriched and accelerated and fosters higher-level
thinking skills, self-reliance, intellectual risk-taking, and character
development. A respect for tradition, coupled with educational excellence,
guides the school. Classes average 16 children and the faculty-to-student
ratio is 1 to 11. Besides the traditional subject areas, the school
also offers courses in music, drama, studio art, foreign language,
and computers. Activities and athletics are available at the middle
school level and all students are encouraged to participate.
