Parents Are Part of the Team
Independent schools believe parents should have a strong role in their children’s educations. Parental involvement in schooling strengthens the whole family and sends a message to children that education is an important part of their lives.

Independent schools are aware that the way in which parents choose to become active in their children’s schools varies greatly. Accordingly, these schools provide many different opportunities for parental involvement.

Most schools have strong parent associations that organize social events, help coordinate volunteer activities, and provide an organized means of communication between parents and school. They also participate in fund-raising events to provide support for both scholarships and school improvements.

For some parents, involvement may mean being a room parent, accompanying children on a field trip, or planning a cultural event. For other parents, involvement may mean volunteering to help oversee an evening of recreational activities in the gymnasium. Other parents might feel best suited to helping arrange a social event that brings parents together to discuss common interests.

Each of these encounters strengthens the life of the schools and creates a community of committed adults supporting the goals of the schools and the students. This feeling of community, with adults and students working together for a common purpose, is one of the distinguishing strengths of independent schools.
