Lake Forest Country Day School was incorporated in May 1958 as a result of the consolidation of the Bell School, founded in 1888, and the Lake Forest Day School, founded in 1927. The school, which enrolls about 430 boys and girls from 3 years old through eighth grade, is divided into two divisions, a Lower School, consisting of preschool through fourth grade, and an Upper School with grades five through eight.
Education at Lake Forest Country Day School promotes intellectual, creative, social, and physical growth and is guided by a family-school concept that supports and challenges students of varying abilities. A shared belief in cooperation and involvement among students, faculty, and parents provides a basis for each childs individual development. LFCDS seeks to build confidence and self-esteem within an environment where acceptance of responsibility, respect and concern for others, and love for learning are actively fostered values. A single campus facility encourages continuity of the family-school tradition.
The school is committed to working effectively with students of varying abilities. Flexible homogeneous and heterogeneous groupings serve the varied needs of students at each grade level and subject area. Consideration is given to academic challenge and social development. The program is broad enough to challenge able youngsters as well as a limited number of students with special needs who are served by a learning development department. Groupings are reviewed regularly so that changes can be made in response to individual needs.
Historically, Lake Forest Country Day School graduates have gone on to a variety of secondary schools. Approximately two-thirds of the graduates choose to attend a local public, independent, or parochial institution, and the other one-third attend independent boarding schools.
