Founded by progressive education pioneer Clara
Bell Baker in 1918, Baker
serves close to 400 toddlers through eighth grade students.
Families come from Chicago, Evanston, Wilmette, and neighboring
communities. In the 21century, Baker continues its mission as a
demonstration school whose outstanding faculty study how children
learn and mentor the next generation of teachers.
Differentiated instruction is enhanced by full-time teaching associates
in all classrooms. A curriculum that promotes academic excellence
is taught through innovative research-based instruction and assessment
tools. Our students think independently, engage collaboratively,
make connections across disciplines, realize their talents and apply
their learning beyond school. We nurture each child to become a
creative, confident and reflective learner, strong in mind, body
and heart.
Recently our facilities have undergone dramatic improvements. With
the completion of 50,000 square feet of green space Baker boasts
a sports field and two play areas including a dedicated Early Childhood
yard. Our library of 18,000 volumes, newly furnished technology/media
lab, performance hall, dance studio, music studio, pool and gymnasium
are used by students prek-8th grades.
The Early Childhood classrooms are central locations for snacks,
lunches, music, Spanish; even the washrooms are part of the classrooms.
As students move into the upper grades, classes are held in the
respective Latin, Spanish, Art, drama, and music rooms. Each special
study is lead by an expert in their field; many of our faculty are
published writers, accomplished artists, and professors of education.
Baker’s inclusive community celebrates individual, family
and cultural differences. Baker graduates attend top public, private
and parochial schools throughout the Chicagoland area. For more
