Chicago-Area Independent Schools

Introduction
Parents in the Chicago area are particularly fortunate to have a wide range of school choices. The schools offer different opportunities and meet diverse needs. From among the types of schools available, the parents of 12,000 students have chosen independent schools because they provide excellent education for children by setting high standards, providing individual attention, and creating an atmosphere that encourages exceptional teaching.

Independent schools are supported by parents, alumni, and friends and are not dependent on public or church funds. These private schools are governed by boards of directors and are responsive to parents.

Most of the schools are accredited by national and regional agencies and many are members of the National Association of Independent Schools, an organization of 900 elementary and secondary schools across the country.
