Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls
and Hardey Preparatory for Boys
Founded in 1876, Sacred
Heart Schools are among the citys oldest educational
institutions. The Schools are members of the Network of Sacred Heart
Schools with 21 elementary and secondary schools in the United States
and nearly 130 schools worldwide.
The essence of a Sacred Heart educationstrong in studies, serious in purpose, and rich in the spirit of life and loveis rooted in the vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart. A Sacred Heart education seeks to develop an active faith in students in addition to strong academic skills and compassionate personal attitudes that will enable them to embrace life with a sense of competence, self-assurance, and hope.
A commitment to excellence, an enthusiasm for learning, and an
orientation to values characterize the academic environment of the
Schools. The curriculum is both creative and rigorous, challenging
students to play an active role in developing their individual intellectual
strengths. The core curriculum of language arts, social studies,
math, and science is augmented, beginning in kindergarten, with
French, computer, music, art, physical education, and religion.
Spanish begins in Grade 6. Small class sizes ensure that our kindergarten
through eighth-grade students receive the individual attention every
child deserves. Graduates go on to attend the areas leading
college-preparatory high schools.
A Chicago landmark on Lake Michigan, the Schools campus occupies
a city block and includes five buildings, chief among them, the
main academic building constructed in 1929, the Campbell Gymnasium
completed in 1965 and the New Academic Wing completed in 2004. The
Schools offer a large, gracious library, state-of-the-art computer
labs, two well-equipped science labs, two art and music studios,
three playgrounds, a double-court gymnasium, and a fully equipped
stage for plays and concerts. Economic, ethnic, and religious diversity
is encouraged. Students come to the Schools from more than 25 different
neighborhoods in the Chicago area.
