Founded in 1888, The
Latin School of Chicago offers a rigorous college preparatory
education that encourages independence, creativity, and curiosity.
It is the School’s mission to complement the pursuit of academic
excellence and intellectual growth with a concern for the moral,
physical, psychological, and aesthetic development of each student.
The Latin School is a diverse community of learners with students
from throughout Chicago and its suburbs. A student/faculty ratio
of 8:1 ensures that every student receives the personal attention
needed to succeed. Typically, 100 percent of Latin graduates go
on to college.
From the start students are academically challenged with a core
curriculum. World language instruction begins in junior kindergarten
and regular computer instruction starts in first grade. Integrated
learning takes place at all levels. A featured course for ninth
graders, for example, is an interdisciplinary humanities class that
combines history, literature, performing arts, and studio art.
The affective education program at Latin begins in kindergarten
and continues through the Middle and Upper School years. It encourages
children to consider various points of view; discuss their feelings;
respect differences among people; and participate responsibly and
cooperatively within small groups and the larger community. This
kind of moral development is further fostered through the Service
Learning Program in which all tenth graders are required to complete
40 hours of community service in conjunction with classroom discussions
and reflection.
The Latin School is an urban campus, located adjacent to Lincoln
Park. Latin’s two academic buildings, Lower School building
at 1531 N. Dearborn Parkway and the Middle/Upper School building
at 59 W. North Blvd, include modern classrooms; state-of-the-art
science, language, and computer labs; a performing arts wing including
a 500-seat theatre; gallery space; two libraries; three gymnasia;
a rooftop playground; a dance studio; a swimming pool; an extensive
photography lab; and four art studios. Latin has a campus-wide computer
network of more than 500 computers.
Campus activities include 23 interscholastic sports fielding more
than 60 teams, over 30 clubs, theatre, dance, wind ensemble, jazz
band, chorus, and visual arts.
